During the pandemic, crime has shifted from preying on tourists to hitting big box businesses. Particularly pharmacies like CVS/Walgreens and high value items at grocery chains. It’s indeed a problem, but vastly blown out of proportion by folks who want to paint the picture that liberal governance is making SF fall apart. It is expensive to live here, but the quality of life - access to culture, food, green space - is hard to beat if you can afford to live here.
Homelessness remains a problem (particularly in the tenderloin) where tent encampments and drug use are a real issue. This isn’t news though (despite “shocked” op-eds in conservative media outlets) and has been endemic for years if not decades. Also not unique from other big cities that have good year-round climates.
