Japan gov't moves to restart aging nuclear reactors unjustifiable
- booi 5y agoHonestly this move seemed inevitable. Renewables wouldn't fill this gap quickly enough and other sources are both dirty and require significant imports. Being dependent on energy imports can and should be interpreted as a threat to autonomy in an increasingly unstable region. Fukushima was a once in a century disaster (if not more?) but there are definitely learnings that can help prevent other similar disasters.
- tinus_hn 5y ago> Fukushima was a once in a century disaster That doesn’t mean we are now 99 years risk free. Nuclear power has always been proven safe, until the disasters.
- greatgib 5y agoI'm a proponent of nuclear power, but only if it is properly regulated! Regarding the bad track record of Japan, I'm wondering if it is very serious for them to go on the way of extending the life of reactors that were maybe not properly maintained...
- 8bitsrule 5y ago>The people of Japan will not be able to agree to easily turn back to nuclear power dependence. A year ago it was being reported that: "Japan targets 45GW offshore wind generation capacity by 2040". [https://www.power-technology.com/news/japan-targets-45gw-offshore-wind-generation-capacity-by-2040/ https://www.power-technology.com/news/japan-targets-45gw-off...] Posted article also says waste from the 3 Fukui reactors >will exceed currently available storage capacity in five to nine years. I'd bet the costs of these restarts will hurt the offshore program. I'd sure like to see the equations (and who devised them).
