There do seem to be inflection points where some good things happen in terms of performance:
Example 1: with SSDs, Windows starts up in a way that is not unbearably slow.
Example 2: My Mac does start lean applications (e.g., iTerm) very quickly.
Example 3: It also wakes up very quickly.
Example 4: 1+ Android phones are also okay in terms of performance.
However, most software (office apps and the like) is still slow to open and operate. Webapps are no different: gmail used to be really fast, but now it's average in terms of performance.
However, the progress that counts to me is that it is now possible to design really fast software, even if most corporations don't.
