I also suggest reading Rory Stewart’s book about his public service in this region of Iraq as part of the invading armies’ custodial government, the CPA. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupational_Hazards https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupational_Hazards The book explains a lot about the underlying political forces and cost of war. Also notable, he’s the guy who walked across Afghanistan just prior to the invasion. He wrote a book about that too which has to be my favorite travel writing.
