What I wish I had known when I was starting out as a developer (2020)
- stavros 5y agoIsn't this just an advertisement? There's very little substance I could find, other than "I wrote a book".
- Toutouxc 5y agoUnless the person who posted this is the author of the book, I think it's okay. Looks like an interesting book to me, and there's a link in the article to a website with what looks like content from the book, all in a nice, caring "Dear new developer" letter form.
- stavros 5y agoSure, but I'd prefer the link to the site itself, at least. As it is, there's very little content in the link (the book isn't even available yet).
- cstuder 5y agoIt was released last year and is indeed available.
- stavros 5y agoAh, so the post isn't even accurate? I had to click three times (two of which were on the book logo on the sidebar) to actually get to the book itself. Anyway, I'll stop complaining now.
- jasode 5y ago>It was released last year and is indeed available. It's confusing because the url the HN user submitted was dated "August 2, 2020" and it has a future tense sentence: "The book arrives in August. I hope you’ll check it out. Since the book was already released, the better link (which lists the TOC) is probably: https://letterstoanewdeveloper.com/the-book/ https://letterstoanewdeveloper.com/the-book/
- mooreds 5y agoThanks! The link you share is indeed the best one to learn more about the book.
- mooreds 5y agoIt is actually the other way around. The book was drawn from the website. About 10% of the book is new content (not available on the website) and the other 90% was rewritten and reviewed by both copy editors and technical reviewers. Anyway, the website is forever free and is here: https://letterstoanewdeveloper.com/ https://letterstoanewdeveloper.com/ Cheers!

- GGfpc 5y agoSeems interesting and something I have been looking for. Does anyone know who Dan Moore is and what his credentials are?
- mooreds 5y agoHiya! You can learn more about me in a few places: * https://letterstoanewdeveloper.com/about/ (probably most relevant, includes career history and podcast interviews) * https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=mooreds has HN stuff * https://github.com/mooreds which has links to most of my social profiles * https://www.mooreds.com/about.shtml (oldschool, see .shtml!) Hope this helps.
- jleyank 5y agoDebugging is harder than you think. Keep code simple. Try to understand what you are setting out to do. As Brooks said, plan for a rewrite cuz you’re going to do it anyway.
