Discord Is Integrating Ethereum
- gcau 5y agoI don't understand the outrage, especially because most of the outrage is over NFTs, which as far as we know currently, this doesn't involve NFT's at all. I also highly doubt anyone is seriously going to move from Discord, there's just no equal competitor, all others are usually lacking a dozen features you get for free with discord, and have far worse UI's.
- iszomer 5y agoConcerns with KYC, privacy, centralization? /shrug
- saltminer 5y agoI'd imagine part of the reason is because of the malicious bots that regularly make rounds and result in @everyone pings warning about the latest way hackers are trying to steal your account (lack of trust in security) combined with the huge potential losses when someone inevitably finds a vulnerability that allows them to drain your crypto. It also doesn't help that they seem to be doing nothing to try and explain themselves. There's no blog posts about this, so speculation is running rampant.
- tehwebguy 5y agoI don’t know much about crypto but I know it costs like $75-150 to send any amount of ethereum, maybe more? Can anyone tell me why it would be a top choice for some random integration right now?
- rvz 5y agoGood question. It is a problem that the supporters of Ethereum refuse to admit and they end up with the same responses [0] that still require you to pay for the unavoidable high gas fees which happily drains your wallet on every operation. As long as you can't use it to pay for your groceries, then it is totally useless. [0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29136101 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29136101

- Canada 5y agoFor an ETH transfer you're looking at $15. For an ERC20 transfer it's about $45. This is 147 gwei at $4800 ETH. You can find out more here: https://etherscan.io/gastracker https://etherscan.io/gastracker
- casi18 5y agoThey aren't necessarily bringing payments or anything else like that. Just adding the ability to easily sign with your connected wallet. This brings lots of functionality. It could be used for logging in, community votes, encryption, admin key sharing (sharmir secrets), shared community wallets. Imagine you have joined a guild in a game that has a guild bank with a bunch of tokens and nfts of game items, these could also be managed in discord with voting and payment streaming done via chat, and when you rage quit the discord server your share of the bank accounts assets is transferred back to your individual wallet. You start a discord server and you have an instant co-op spun up with accounts, voting systems, and membership structure all in place. Thats attractive to gamers/activists/the local church group/political parties/etc. (and despite what the other commenter says, that sounds much more interesting and has more possibilities than worrying about paying for groceries)
- jakecopp 5y agoMight be time to move to Matrix hey :D Element provides free accounts, managed hosting designed for communities [1] or you can host your own [2]. There are plenty of clients in case you don't like Element [3]. - angusturner 5y agoWow, a lot of people are upset about this. Curious what HN thinks of the argument that Layer 2 scaling + POS will solve / mitigate the environmental problems with ETH at the moment.
- bradwood 5y agoL2 is probably a better choice here IMHO. Maybe Polygon? As regards PoW vs PoS: this is a huge argument - both for and against. PoW can act like an electricity buyer of last resort, soaking up excess waste and enabling green business models for power provision to be viable.
- mdotk 5y agoNow I can pay $200 in gas fees for a $10 subscription? Awesome!
- casi18 5y agoTwitter, Reddit, Stripe, Discord... Makes a lot of sense, hopefully the first thing is adding things like snapshot integration and other dao tools. Then integrate with layer 2 for digital assets/community tokens. I wonder, in 5 years will HN still be talking about tulips, or will people start making things..
