Ya, the problem is legal challenges with a lot of locations, ie:
- some countries have no legal system, big risk to hire there.
- some countries are illegal to do business with depending on the companies location
- some countries/states/counties have local taxes and weird tax nexus issues. That can be a big problem.
Where are you based? Is your location one that falls into one of those?
- woodson 5y agoLocal taxes are usually not an issue if hired as a contractor. You will have to pay taxes and social insurance system contributions in the local country according to the local laws yourself. Getting hired as a regular employee is definitely much much more complicated.
- bwb 5y agoIf you are a large company what you have to worry about is that countries individual contractor rules and tests. Which can be a factor in some locations (in my experience it was a factor in Canada, USA, and UK).
- murzenkovtn 5y agoI am in Ukraine. Taxation could be really nice explanation of this weirdness.
- bwb 5y agoYa, it could also have to do with time zones. For example, a small company might not worry about legal implications as they can float in a bit of gray area... but once a startup hits $100m valuation they might need to do a ton of extra work in order to hire in Ukraine. For example, they might need to form a legal presence in the EU, etc etc...
