I totally believe that people should get vaccinated, I and my whole family have been vaccinated, I'm going to get a booster. However, the chance of developing severe illness and death after a COVID-19 infection is nowhere near 10%, and not even 2% unless you stretch the definition of "severe". The rate of death is between 0.25% and 0.5%, based on CDC estimate of 3.2 unreported cases per positive PCR test, and ratio of positive PCR tests to deaths of around 50-60.
Also, I know people who have refused to get vaccinated, though most of my friends have, and it seems to be of two types:
1) people who already had COVID-19
2) people who have a gut-level reaction to the idea, that has nothing to do with what news stories they do or don't read. If you knock down one reason, they will pick another; avoiding any discussion of rare reactions will not do anything except heighten their paranoia that there's something hidden/sneaky about it.
