Rare heart inflammation cases (around one in 6000) were reported in teenagers after their COVID-19 vaccination. These cases have been mild and self-resolving. However, the chance of developing severe illness and death after a COVID-19 infection is much higher (2-10%). There is a higher risk of myocarditis from COVID itself than there is from the vaccine.
- 7174n6 5y agoI think the 2-10% rate you speak of is the rate of serious illness of death of all ages, including elderly. The issue is with teenagers and young adults. The chance of covid death for them is much less, almost non-existent. Maybe we're mixing numbers. right?
- rossdavidh 5y agoI totally believe that people should get vaccinated, I and my whole family have been vaccinated, I'm going to get a booster. However, the chance of developing severe illness and death after a COVID-19 infection is nowhere near 10%, and not even 2% unless you stretch the definition of "severe". The rate of death is between 0.25% and 0.5%, based on CDC estimate of 3.2 unreported cases per positive PCR test, and ratio of positive PCR tests to deaths of around 50-60. Also, I know people who have refused to get vaccinated, though most of my friends have, and it seems to be of two types: 1) people who already had COVID-19 2) people who have a gut-level reaction to the idea, that has nothing to do with what news stories they do or don't read. If you knock down one reason, they will pick another; avoiding any discussion of rare reactions will not do anything except heighten their paranoia that there's something hidden/sneaky about it.
