Ask HN: How often do you visit and what’s the use you do of “new” section at HN?
- mtmail 5y agoSomebody in /new needs to give questions the first upvote so they show up on https://news.ycombinator.com/ask https://news.ycombinator.com/ask Here's mine. I use /new more often than the frontpage and look out for serious offenses (spam mostly). Several times per day out of habit.
- verdverm 5y agoSame same, I think I'm the primary "HN is not a jobs board..." commenter I often find interesting posts which never make the front too.
- mtmail 5y agoFor me it started a couple of years ago. In my non-US timezone I saw a dozen spam posts (prostitution, gambling) when browsing /new and realized not enough users see them and act (flag). The individual submissions are surely ignored by any reader and do no harm. But long-term I don't want HN to be added to any "post any link there, they don't check" growth hack lists, it would drive down quality. It's gotten better, the automatic algorithms/detection got better (I have no insight how exactly those work). My joy now is discovering automatically blocked submissions and clicking 'vouch'. Discovering good submissions, or something that might spark a good discussion, is the goal. The flagging is secondary. (Clicked 'vouch' on https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29144200 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29144200 while writing this, not sure why it was auto-blocked, maybe the user has several accounts)
- PaulHoule 5y agoMe too
- BrendanThompson 5y agoI certainly check the "new" page more than I check the Front Page. FP is a twice a day affair and new is several times through out the day.
- mikewarot 5y agoI read it when I've caught up with everything else... the high rate of [dead] and [flagged] entries shows me the level or crud Dang has to deal with, which makes me appreciate him even more.
