I've had explorer.exe crash many many times.

  Explorer hosts a million plugins for everything that wants to do things like add a menu entry to the desktop right click menu, and each of them can crash or hang Explorer. It’s just a terrible design.

    Wait until you hear how Finder handles things, I honestly couldn't believe my ears the first time I asked "why can't I close the filepicker?"

        There’s similar interfaces for Finder for things like Dropbox, except not every mouse driver has a plug-in and if it turns out the model is problematic, like on Windows, Apple has no issues with repairing it and forcing the plugins to update. Backwards compatibility is nice but it drags you down.

  Explorer is pretty stable if you don't have any shell add-ins loaded.
