Not sure if it's been mentioned in here yet, but the biggest annoyance was Mom picking up the phone to make a call and disconnecting you. It was rare to have more than one or two phone lines in the average household, so being online competed with voice calls. The bigger the household, the more annoying this resource constraint became.
