Ask HN: What new name should we use instead of 'Metaverse'?

I think we should use metaverse and meta (lowercase m) frequently and often, just to fuck with Meta/Facebook. They don't own the words.

My side projects lately involve images, illusions, and objects with one foot in the real world and one in the digital world. I hesitate to call these ‘metaverse-ready’ but they are. I’m not sure putting any label on them makes them easier to understand, so I don’t. When it hits you, you feel it, and that is good enough for me.

The Matrix? Cyberspace? Third Life? Web 3.0? Perhaps, like a new territory being colonised and declaring independence, the name should be decided by the community that lives there, in which case it is too early to give it a permanent name yet.

Metastanza. Metamood. Both of these are a play on the theme of poetry (verse, stanza, mood, and theme ironically). Metarecto (from recto verso). They are meta on metaverse.

  oh, Adverse, now we're talkin. :-D i was just thinking -- i feel stupid - got played - fakebook put the 'metaverse' term out here and we all ate it up, then they surprised us with the new name, 'Meta', so they 'own' the term/new world, and i don't want them to own it. in part b/c i think it's going to be stupendously successful, and i don't want to answer to Lord Zuck any more than i already do.

    I don’t use any Facebook products. Social media is just a scam to sell my attention to advertisers. I ditched it all years ago and somehow my life went on. I will probably ignore the “metaverse” too. I don’t want to participate in a toxic and ad-laden virtual world. If I did I have video games.
