I did it (mid-40s, married, with one child), but I did have some past IT experience. I have seen others do it, though, with almost no IT experience. I took an in-person course at General Assembly in 2017. The group support with the immersive environment was exactly what I needed to find the confidence and excitement to carry this career transition through to fruition. I spent many 12-hour days coding non-stop. Personally, I don't know if I could have done this on my own in a non-interactive environment. I still keep in contact with some of the folks I graduated with. If in-person is not an option, make sure you find a way to have one-on-one interactions and peer reviews. The communication of your work to others is key.
