It used to be "beggars can't be choosers" now it's "beggars have a moral duty to be choosers and by the way the beggars are only begging because of systemic injustice and not due to any failing on their part and also if you criticize beggars you're punching down"
- rightbyte 5y ago'An income tax “would perhaps be a form of a death knell to this little bit of momentum we were having,” Parfet told me.' No wonder they are begging? If the citizen does feel (maybe rightfully) that they don't want to work for the community, it is hard to imagine anything but shitty results.
- rkk3 5y agoHuh? The person giving hundreds of millions of dollars isn't working for the community? That quote was expressing his concern about a municipal death spiral of Higher Taxes & Austerity because the city's budget was so underwater from decreased economic activity (Rust-Belt)
- rightbyte 5y agoSorry, I was referring to the tax payers, not the donators. I.e. if you are paying say 5% income tax, you are essentially and simplified working for the community 5% of your time.
- cycomanic 5y agoIf you give money to the city under conditions that directly financially benefit you, are you really donating or are you buying influence?
- rkk3 5y agoTaxable income would have to be in the tens of billions (has this even ever happened?) for a local income tax to be in the 3 hundred million range... And who knows if Kalimazoo is even their claimed residence. They clearly aren't financially benefiting.
