Many years ago, I worked on a serial link (think SATA, PCIe, USB 3, etc.) that had a small embedded processor to self test the link, perform analog component calibration, link equalizer calibration, and even make an eye diagram for link characterization. We could patch it with a few instructions over the JTAG port. There are way more processors in ICs than you would ever imagine.
