Very much agree. IDEs can be great, but in the hands of someone just learning they encourage a cargo cult style that becomes a barrier to actually knowing what you're doing. I've had to work with people who are still stuck cargo culting thing 15+ years into their careers. Not fun. Relatedly, they can also assist people who to get just enough success (in the cargo cult sense) to get a degree, when they would be much better off in a different field. It does them (and their future team mates) a disservice.
