Two men caught stealing bikes. What should S.F. do about them?

- 0des 5y agoI had a bike stolen recently; an authentic classic Schwinn cruiser, all steel frame with a fresh pair of tubes and white walls. I live in a safe area with a tight community, but there is access to a main road. I can't describe the feeling of being alienated, knowing someone watched my house enough to wait until my bicycle was unattended for the 10 minutes they needed to steal it. It puts you in this weird state of, "well, what would I do when confronted with the thieves" or wondering if I even wish ill of the person who stole my bike, or think about what the appropriate punishment would/should be. Maybe they were in a tough situation, maybe they were just a thievin' type of individual. When I think about it in terms of cost, it's hard to be angry about a cost so small. When I think about the value lost though, it's a different story. A bike is an object that becomes such an intimate and integral part of your life that when it disappears it is like losing a pet or a friend, or the person you sit next to on the bus every day. I wouldn't hurt the person who stole my bike, and I probably wouldn't shout at them, I'd just want to hear from them what brought them to that point, just to put those feelings at rest. God damn I miss that bike :/
