Thread about companies upgrading to M1 Max MacBook 2021
- throwawaymanbot 5y ago….Flexing about the Apple surveillance machine.
- throwaway_tesla 5y agoVery jealous. I work in Tesla firmware (throwaway account) and builds are notoriously long. It was 4 years before I received a new laptop and I had to threaten to put in a 2 week notice before I finally was approved for a new one (I had been asking patiently for over a year.). Still common to this date for us to use outdated hardware. Great company, but does not understand the importance of equipping engineers with up to date hardware.
- throwaway_tesla 5y agoThe new laptop helped tremendously with build speeds. It's puzzling why we skimp out on a few thousand $ of hardware for engineers making 6-7 digit incomes.
- malshe 5y agoI also don’t understand the logic behind handicapping own employees. The hardware cost is really trivial. I’m in academia for years and I basically just buy my own hardware at this point. I started doing it when the associate dean of research at my university refused to reimburse me for wireless mouse and keyboard bought from my own research budget! I realized that they won’t approve anything that’s not in their standard equipment list, which has basically 2-3 Dell computers.
- wcdolphin 5y agoI really wanted the M1 upgrade story to be a slam dunk, but it seems like docker on arm64 is a real thorn of incompatibility and poor performance with amd64 images.
- jstsch 5y agoWe also got a bunch of M1 Pro’s and are running into this. For the more typical web stuff we’re just using ARM packages and it’s going fine, but for a large SAAS there are too many differences between dev and production this way.
