Yep, you're describing the offices and schools I've worked and studied in for the last 5 or 6 years. 8-16 hours a day in rooms without sunlight. It rarely crosses my mind. I can say that I would in a heartbeat, no questions asked, choose a single-person room with no windows that I only sleep and study in, over a shared room where I have minimal privacy and I run the risk of having my sleep schedule be completely trashed by an inconsiderate roommate.
This design is asking you to walk out of your room if you want sunlight. It's not ideal. Some students would rather not. They're doing sardine-packing here as a matter of necessity and there's going to be some tradeoffs, but frankly this is a pretty minor one.

It's not like this is a new problem. There are plenty of ways to pack a building and still give each room a window - a famous example being the Pentagon building. The view way not be particularly nice, but at least it would give you fresh air and a sense of time and space. He said has has copied architecture patterns from cruise ships. Of course you can't design a ship with courtyards, so windowless cabins sort of make sense there. But he is not building a cruise ship.

Total pricetag is about the same at $1.4B. Does UCSB have a pier? Hmm...
