I recently (last few months) upstreamed changes to a project maintained by the SQLite owners. The process was fairly straight forward but the difficulty of creating the patch was much higher. I needed to learn a bunch of things that I didn't already know. I did this because I didn't want to maintain the divergence from our code (and wanted a more general fix which the devs could implement better than I could) so I put up with the pain. I don't think I'd do this at home if I was just bored.
Maybe that makes me lazy (which I am) or a bad developer. It is a barrier though as, like it or not, we all know git.
