Sacks and VanderZanden first met at Yammer in 2008. VanderZanden had written his own version of Yammer in Ruby on Rails and rather than compete, he joined the Yammer team. He left coding and became a business man leading Yammer's sales team. Then he went on to Lyft and Uber before starting Bird. At first Sacks didn't buy the idea of scooters working and was no where near ready to invest. But their history together and trying the scooters made Sacks a believer.
