New facility producing lab-grown meat plans to produce 400k pounds per year
- stefantalpalaru 5y agoThat's a lot of freshly-squeezed aborted calves: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_bovine_serum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_bovine_serum > Huge tanks known as bioreactors line the main room, where cells harvested from live animals will be bathed in nutrients such as glucose, vitamins and amino acids. The bioreactors create an environment similar to an animal’s body, and the nutrients feed the cells until they get bigger, forming an unstructured, ground meat-like product. That's not how it works. You need hormones that we cannot synthesize yet.
- GhettoComputers 5y agoI just saw a video on Bloomberg about eating lab grown chicken. https://youtu.be/TPQqXL8WVPk https://youtu.be/TPQqXL8WVPk it’s a bit rubbery with a different texture and it’s dryer, so it sounds like it’s still inferior to the humble chicken nugget. The article says no price yet (not surprised), it’ll be able to make 50,000lb a year, and the government has not approved its products for sale.
- tsol 5y agoMuch of the flavor of meat comes from the fat. Not being able to create the lipid stores that naturally occur in meat will remove a lot of what makes it so good. Mainly flavor and texture. It's a complicated problem, growing lipid cells structured as they are in a body is an entirely new problem
- GhettoComputers 5y agoI don't think they need to make fats, the tallow taste of McD fries is added, but its not fully artificial, its apparently made not made with any beef but its made of milk and wheat. https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/small-french-fries.html https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/small-french-frie... >Natural Beef Flavor [wheat And Milk Derivatives]*
