That's curious that his parents and your family discouraged him/you from computer science. I would've thought most parents would be happy about that choice of major for their kids.
- smoldesu 5y agoJust my N+1 anecdata, but knowing what I know now I'd never encourage a young person to step into the tech industry. It's genuinely brutal, people should focus on specializations instead of assuming that knowing how to code will make you a valuable asset.
- pintxo 5y agoCoding is the baseline. Being able to apply it to the problems of an industry helps a lot.
- reducesuffering 5y agoHe started the major in 2007. In my experience, CS only started being a famously lucrative major around ~2016. Before then, parents especially weren't up to date and still considered medicine and law to be the good careers. And of course, after reading the article: 'When Hashimoto went to college, his dad told him he had one year to pursue "that computer thing." "If I couldn’t prove to him in a year it was useful in some way, I either had to pay for college myself or become a lawyer or doctor," Hashimoto says.'
