EA Calls NFT and Play-to-Earn Games “The Future of Our Industry”
- thesuperbigfrog 5y ago"Play-to-Earn" seems like it could be somewhere between pay-to-win / microtransactions and low-ish stakes gambling. I suppose it could open up e-sports to highly competitive and skilled players everywhere, but I am skeptical of how it could impact casual gaming and the more traditional "pay money once for a good quality game" experience.
- astlouis44 5y agoPlay fun games, make money. Who doesn't want that..? This could be one of the biggest consumer trends in history, if executed right.
- verdverm 5y agoIf there is money out, there must be money in. Where does that original money come from?
- viro 5y agogas fees ... -_-
- verdverm 5y agoThat would imply the fees are higher than the actual values being moved. In reality it will be addicts like any pay to play game where a small few contribute the vast majority of income. Also a possibility for view contribution, where the vast majority of output goes to a small few top creators.
- proc0 5y agoIt would just be another form of gambling, just like they did with micro-transaction lootboxes. I'm pretty sure there is a market out there for games as a product; games as an immersive, cohesive experience from beginning to end, just like a movie, except with gameplay. The problem I think was mobile games completely sidetracking the whole industry with micro-transactions and increasingly making games as a service. This is why in general good gaming experiences are now in the past (I'm pretty sure it's not nostalgia). I'm hoping this changes with the advent of game engines democratizing development more and more.
- hulitu 5y agoEA is a disaster. I will actively avoid it. I don't play games often but half of the time was spent updating.
