This is nothing new. In tech circles we've been talking about this since at least the Zynga-Facebook era (eg [1]) and probably much earlier. I mean it's good advice. Often you don't have a choice or at least the alternatives are so bad you'll hamstring yourself by avoiding a potential loss (eg Youtube).
