As a parent, the pacification thing is very useful sometimes! Toys don't pacify as reliably and if you are in a situation where you need or want to pay attention to other adults undisturbed but your child is there, then I totally understand the usage of screens in that way. Obviously you can try and arrange your life to avoid such situations but they do crop up. Work meetings with an ill child at home spring to mind! On the other hand, I did find that the more time you give your child playing with toys uninterrupted, the more their attention span for that improves.
