It's worth reading before you flag it as the issues discussed concern us all. It's not a pure interview; the interviewer doesn't agree with him and basically criticizes everything he says. After each sentence he says, she adds her own opinion explaining to the reader that this sentence is unacceptable and that he is wrong.
What is interesting though, she often does not explain why. It would be much more interesting if, instead of this double speak, she actually told him all this rather than dosing it to the reader. We are adults after all and we can form our own opinions based on what two other adults talk about; personally I find this kind of explaining to me why someone is wrong a bit insulting.
My feeling is that at some point she lacked arguments so rather than continuing the discussion with him, she made her opinion clear to the reader. Maybe also to make sure nobody gets offended by an article published in The Independent.
- WalterGR 5y agoWhy is it worth reading if it’s such a bad article?
- hdjjhhvvhga 5y agoJust because of the points the interviewer fails to address or addresses poorly. I bet many of us witnessed similar discussions; here, the arguments of both sides are exposed and you can see their weak points. Some of these give me food for thought.
- WalterGR 5y agoIf the interviewer addresses the points so poorly, isn’t the article basically then just a straw man argument in favor of the interviewee’s side? If the subject is worth discussing, then it’s worth discussing a source with good arguments presented by each side.
- LurkingPenguin 5y agoPersonally, I think occasionally reading poorly-written/flawed articles is a good way to keep one's critical thinking skills (and BS detector) honed. If we only consume content that we believe is well-written and logically consistent if not persuasive, or that we agree with, I believe our critical thinking skills atrophy.
- rvz 5y agoThis is the typical expectation of articles from the independent these days which to me is not surprising given its slanted towards the (il)liberal left. > What is interesting though, she often does not explain why. This is the problem with this article. They won't explain why but instead will get them cancelled instead because they simply disagree with them or they are 'offended'. For them, if you don't have an argument, why not attack the person and blame them for everything instead?
