Ask HN: How to prevent “boil in bag”-laptop
Hi HN! Yesterday I had my second case of boil-in-bag-laptop in about a month.
Besides draining my battery this can't be very good for the hardware.
Any ideas (besides switching back to Linux) for how to make sure that:
1. Windows turns off when the lid is closed
2. Doesn't somehow start again after being put in the bag.
- compressedgas 5y agoJust hibernate the laptop and then remove the battery.

The reason this doesn't always happen, might be down to Windows Update I presume (or some other application preventing shut-down). Maybe, you can look into changing the configuration/behavior of Windows Update. If it's a "Home" edition, you might not be allowed to turn off automatic updates though...
- llampx 5y agoSee if you can switch the sleep mode in the BIOS to S3 or a Linux mode if it exists. Modern Standby seems to be the culprit for the boil-in-bag phenomenon.
- gerardnico 5y agoPush the on/off button and check that the disk activity light is off.
