The truth about the growing diesel submarine threat from a veteran sub hunter
- cafard 5y agoI guess the US could buy a couple of the submarines that France was supposed to build for Australia, and so give our guys some adversaries to practice against while also soothing French feelings.
- AtlasBarfed 5y agoDisclaimer: I think the Navy is incredibly outmoded and a massive waste of money. But basically, shouldn't any surface fleet have a TON of drone ships surrounding a formation that is actively pinging for subs? The problem here is passive detection not active, right? So if you have a huge network of drones that constantly deploy and return to the support ships in a fleet doing pings? You could even do air deploy, and then they automatically return to the ship. Maybe they have these. But I think the US military is resisting drone warfare culturally, which is a HUGE mistake. The Navy already has a very public example of drones overwhelming them in the Millenium Challenge 2002. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002) And OHMYGOD that was almost two decades ago. I don't care how allegedly good your point defense lasers are. They probably can't stop an incoming barrage of 1000 missles or 10000 drones, both of which are probably far cheaper than the cost of the capital ship and can be iterated and manufactured far more quickly.
