What's New in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Beta
- throw0101a 5y agoSo what are people using as an alternative to CentOS these days? Is there a consensus yet?
- awill 5y agoI think Rocky Linux is winning so far.
- freedomben 5y agoI use CentOS Stream for the majority of CentOS use cases and have been extremely pleased. For stuff (like my home router) I've been using alma linux. I really like their focus on working with the community. I also like the fact that they don't act like Red Hat (the company) is their enemy. Disclosure: I'm an ex-Red Hatter
- awill 5y ago>>RHEL 9 Beta ... has fewer changes that require admins and IT Ops to learn new ways of doing things. Familiar with RHEL 8? Then RHEL 9 Beta will help you feel right at home. Changing from SysV (RHEL5) to Upstart (RHEL6) to systemd (RHEL7) was a lot of churn. RHEL8 stuck with systemd but added Wayland, replaced iptables with nftables, and yum with dnf.
- buggeryorkshire 5y agoIt's interesting after the Centos changes that at <current job> we've lost all appetite for anything RHEL related. It kind of doesn't make any difference in a containerised world where the base OS is going to be one of any number of slim shims, but I can't see how RH are going to keep their numbers up.
- redwood 5y agoDoes the OS really matter any more? Feels commoditized. What's IBM's real play here--OpenShift? Monetize RHEL via OpenShift? Do people actually put RHEL containers on OpenShift is that mostly Ubuntu like Docker traditionally was?
- freedomben 5y agoDisclosure: Former Red Hatter but didn't work on RHEL IMHO yes RHEL still matters a lot, maybe more than ever. While there is no doubt a focus on being a rock-solid long-lived the host OS, a lot of people do use RHEL in the container as well. The value of the software collection (rhscl) is still really high, and as a bonus when you do that, Red Hat guarantees compatibility so will fix it if it doesn't work. For people that don't use rhscl there is also the Red Hat universal base image which is free to use and is fully redistributable. Does an individual developer care as much about the host OS? No I wouldn't think so.
