The Mountain of Tongues
- kgeist 5y ago>the kingdom of Georgia has proved to be the only long-term survivor, despite being periodically reduced to a depopulated wasteland by Arab horsemen, by Timur Lang, by Catherine the Great’s army of ‘liberation’ and, in the last century, by Stalin’s Great Terror. Was it? Stalin himself was Georgian; when destalinization started in the 50's, there were unprecedented mass protests in Georgia (the only place out of all USSR) because many Georgians at the time viewed him as a national hero. Depopulated wasteland under Stalin, seriously?
- kgeist 5y agoJust checked, Georgia's population increased from 2.6 mln to 4 mln under Stalin. Maybe there was terror, but I wouldn't call it depopulated wasteland.
- specproc 5y agoYeah, disappointing from Rayfield, he's generally pretty well respected. The big depopulation of the 20th century came in the 90s, when a big chunk of the minorities and a lot of Georgians got out away from the civil war. It lost about a mil between 1990 and 2010[1], pretty dramatic for a country that's at 3.7ish today.
