'Ghost port': Asia's first fully-automated port begins operations in Qingdao
- dsq 5y agoJust as massive railway investment for civilian use in the 19th century was key to military movement plans in the early 20th century, so swift and massive sealift for trade can be used for transporting munitions and other supplies globally, thus aiding in CCP power projection.
- sudosysgen 5y agoMilitary sealift is tiny in comparison to commercial sealift. The relative benefit of fully automated ports is pretty low actually. By far the biggest issue is getting allies to supply your ships, and military logistics ships, not trying to skimp on a few hundred port workers.
- nsonha 5y agothis is the country that is under the most stress in the world for job creation, yet they's still ahead in automation technologies
- OneTimePetes 5y agoIs it? The demographic pyramid of the one child policy is coming to fruition - china is going to be automation heaven for the next years.
- nsonha 5y agoa one child China still needs a lot more jobs than any other country. Their near future will have both a big chunk of the population older, who need smart tech and a massive workforce still
- OneTimePetes 5y agoIt has a surplus of blue collar jobs and a oversupply of children wanting white collar jobs (the only viable way to supply for the older generations pensions). China is on a Route for massive upheaval. There are already protests of students, whos diploma has been downgraded to force them int blue collar jobs - condemning there parents to poverty.
- nsonha 5y ago> a surplus of blue collar jobs and a oversupply of children wanting white collar jobs is this unique to China? > protests of students, whos diploma has been downgraded to force them int blue collar jobs Institutional education leaves people disillusioned, hardly unique to China either
- OneTimePetes 5y agoThis is hardly the same. Here is one of the "rare" leaks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDhlIvG2EdA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDhlIvG2EdA They actually devalue the title by merging trade-schools with colleges. Imagine paying college tuition to get a trade-education for it.
- nsonha 5y ago> devalue the title People still give a shit about this title thing? If you are paying college tuition for the "title" but get trade-education instead, that would be a scam. The scam is your actual education not the degree you receive. Sounds like this government reform changes nothing about the actual quality of the education. And please don't just assume people know random dude on youtube that you follow. Who is this guy, what makes him a credible source of information on China? Why couldn't he just get to the contemporary matter already without constantly referring back to Tiananmen? Yawning as as watching through this.

- mbrodersen 5y agoNot at all. Wages are going up in China so automation is becoming competitive. If they don’t automate, countries outside of China will automate and out compete China.
- LargoLasskhyfv 5y agoYah, well...come to the club. - nsonha 5y agoClub of what? This seems to be semi automated while the one in China claims to be fully automated.
- LargoLasskhyfv 5y agoNope. China video says 9 people per ship instead of about 60 before. It's essentially the same technology, in similar scale. And that artificial intelligence is just BS marketing speech for some clever software, nothing special.
- nsonha 5y agoRight I suspected so, thanks for debunking
- LargoLasskhyfv 5y agoNo problem. edit: btw. there are countless tv-documentaries about different parts of the operations of that part of the harbour. One very essential thing is the planning and sequence of the unloading and reloading/stacking of the containers, according to weight, freight manifest, reefer connections, and destination on the line/relation. (In German, OFC) That part would be a prime candidate for 'AI'. Still done by humans, so far.
- michelb 5y agoSo, this opened in 2017, I wonder how it is going now? It seems they have been iterating on the container lifting and transporting.
