I was thinking 1q84 but certainly recent Murakami, I downloaded a scan of the golden bough last year (also meaning to dig into it) and I also reread 1q84 last year.
- version_five 5y agoHmmm, now its bothering me. In 1q84 he's reading Chekhov - Salkhalin island, and Aomame is reading "in search of lost time", I don't remember other literary references but I'm sure there are more. In Killing Comendatore I think I remember him reading a book about sea battles... Kafka by the shore he reads Arabian Nights and some other things when he's hanging out at the library... I'll have to see if I can find it. I'm sure I could look it up somewhere bit it's an interesting way to test the memory.

- version_five 5y agoThanks, I was actually leafing through the book in question and thinking i would never find the reference. All of his books I'd like to re-read and make notes of the rabbit holes to go down. I did at one point listen to Janacek's Sinfonietta, which was interesting but not memorable for someone who has no experience classic classical music. I did read some Chekhov on the strength of Murakami's mention and that I enjoyed.
