I cancelled my Starlink pre-order yesterday. I had been stuck on old satellite internet at the house (HughesNet) and was really excited about Starlink. I signed up for the beta as soon as I was eligible but didn’t get in, then pre-ordered on the first day I was eligible but the ETA for the order kept getting pushed back. Also they said that the pre-order saved your spot in line and I’m certain I pre-ordered before my neighbor but they just got their dish.
In the meantime I happened to see an ad for T-Mobile’s 5G home internet offering and surprisingly they said I was in range. It’s cheap ($50/mo, half the price of Starlink) and there’s no contract so I gave it a shot and it’s been great the past month. Speeds and ping comparable to what I’ve seen people getting on Starlink.
- LinuxBender 5y agoI've contemplated that as well to tie me over until I have fiber. The only thing holding me back is their history of being hacked every couple of years but maybe I can use fake info. What is the cumulative bandwidth cap and what is the cost if you go over?
- toomuchtodo 5y agoNo cap, but the device receives the lowest priority on the tower.
- oceanplexian 5y agoI've got Starlink and have been nothing but impressed. Granted I'm not the target audience, for me it's a backup to a fiber connection, but I've had some substantial time to play with it. Starlink is much more consistent than an AT&T tethered through an iPhone (Not real 5G but "fake" 5G). Starlink will stay rock solid at 30ms, AT&T will fluctuate between 30-150 depending on the time of day and phase of the moon. Starlink gives me a rock solid 300Mbps/30Mbps, AT&T is all over the map, sometimes i'll hit 150 or 200Mbps, sometimes I'll struggle to hit 10. Plus with ATT, Verizon, or even T-Mobile I'm supporting an highly corrupt telecom oligopoly, where with SpaceX my money is going towards bringing high-speed internet to the world. It was a no brainer.
