Correct me if I'm wrong, but this article doesn't really seem to be talking about actual competence, but only projections of competence in social interactions. There's a big difference here: You can act like you know everything and still have lots of bullshit ideas. Anybody with enough experience in a field will quickly figure these people out and put them in the "ignore" box.
