Google's Tensor inside of Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro
- KuiN 5y agoReally shows you what an excellent job the Apple Silicon team have been doing. Latest A series SoCs are ahead of the Android competition by miles in most metrics. I was hoping custom Google Silicon might get closer to competing, but maybe I had my expectations set far too high.
- ayngg 5y agoI think you have to take into consideration that Apple has been providing their offerings for over a decade now (starting with A4 in 2010) and have their own special license to design their own chips that use ARM instructions, while this is I believe Google's first offering and it is done through Samsung and is sort of like an exynos+ rather than a completely new design. Maybe after a few more iterations it will be more competitive, maybe they actually get to design their own architecture or they could do the Google thing and just give up a few years from now and sunset tensor.
- silexia 5y agoI have had the Pixel 6 Pro one day. So far, I think my Pixel 2 was better. I don't like having to use gestures that only sometimes work instead of the back and home buttons. The fingerprint deal only works sometimes. My old Pixel 2 still worked very well, the only reason I upgraded was I use my phone for business and the lack of security upgrades on the old phone forced me to get the new one.
- mosdl 5y agoYou can enable the old navigation model in accessibility settings.
- tata71 5y agoOn GrapheneOS.org, you can be web installed and choosing between three styles of navigation in minutes! Whatever works best!
- Grazester 5y agoIs there a reason these gestures don't work? Like you have not gotten use to properly performing them? I moved from a Pixel 2 to a Pixel 5 when I shattered my Pixel 2's screen and I am not a fan of gestures. It was damn right awkward and clunky at first but they work once you figure it out.
- pja 5y agoYou can get the buttons back if you want, at the cost of some screen real estate. & agreed, the UI distinction between swiping up & swiping up from the bottom edge is both a pain to distinguish physically & I can never remember which is which. Swiping in from the right for back also makes tapping things on the right edge a bit of a lottery: will the UI decide I was in fact swiping in as a back gesture this time? Who knows... Gestures are a nice idea in principle, but in practice I'm not sure that they're an improvement on actual buttons you know that you're pressing.

- ksec 5y agoSo finally Google had to make their own AV1 hardware decoding IP, I am wondering if they will license it out for free as well.
