I never had much of a problem with 'color', but grey/gray got me every single time. Always went with the British spelling. However, at this point, I actually can't remember which spelling is which. I have to look it up. 'a' is the American one, right? (gosh, I hope I'm right)

There's an easy to way to remember which is which. GrEy is English, grAy is American.

  Of course, both spellings are common in American English.
