I ask this every time there's an article about Autopilot behaving badly and still no good answer... What is a (hypothetical) situation where Autopilot would definitely be responsible for an accident? Not brushed off as "the driver is responsible and should have had hands on the wheel at all times."
- paxys 5y agoNot until level 5 is rolled out – so potentially never.
- conductr 5y agoI think that's the problem, they've been allowed to legalese away all liability. There would have to be an OTA update so bug ridden that it caused multiple accidents in short order and with major carnage. In that instance, someone might notice the "trend" or public outcry would become loud enough.
- gpm 5y agoAn accident where it failed to listen to the driver overriding it and did the bad thing anyways, would be an unambiguous case. A trend where it was frequently (over the background human accident rate) making decisions that resulted in it switching from driving normally to an accident being inevitable in less time than a human can react. Something like it frequently sharply turning the wheels at highway speed. Short of something like that which takes agency away from the driver, the driver is in control and responsible for the vehicle, whether they are using assistive technology or not. Accidents also happen already, it doesn't make sense to insist on assistive technology being superhuman at avoiding them.
