Apple Wants iPhones to Detect Car Crashes, Auto-Dial 911
- 1cvmask 5y agoI hope this has a toggle off switch. It's rather irksome and cringeworthy to me. Almost as Orwellian a feeling as the "CSAM" alleged protection. Even though this probably has less abuse potential from a tyrannical autocratic surveillance state.
- Someone 5y agoThe Apple Watch already has a features that detects people crashes and calls 911. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208944 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208944: “If Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 4 or later detects a hard fall while you're wearing your watch, it taps you on the wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert. You can choose to contact emergency services or dismiss the alert by pressing the Digital Crown, tapping Close in the upper-left corner, or tapping "I'm OK." If your Apple Watch detects that you're moving, it waits for you to respond to the alert and won't automatically call emergency services. If your watch detects that you've been immobile for about a minute, it will make the call automatically.” That has an on/off switch. I don’t see why this feature would be different. On the other hand, there’s this (same page): “If you entered your age when you set up your Apple Watch, or in the Health app, and you’re age 55 and over, this feature turns on automatically.” Also, modern cars may also automatically call emergency services. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECall https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECall: “eCall (an abbreviation of "emergency call")[1] is an initiative by the European Union, intended to bring rapid assistance to motorists involved in a collision anywhere within the European Union. The aim is for all new cars to incorporate a system that automatically contacts the emergency services in the event of a serious accident, sending location and sensor information. eCall was made mandatory in all new cars sold within the European Union as of April 2018.”

Advanced crash notification systems have clear benefits: if every vehicle/driver had an ACN system, an additional ~2,700 vehicle occupants who need a Level I or II trauma center could receive it annually in the United States, and ~162,000 annually would not be sent to a Level I or II trauma center who didn't need it [1]. 1: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jamcollsurg.2016.03.028 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jamcollsurg.2016.03.028
