Depends what you mean by "touch typing". I was typing pretty fast at a young age (young age compared to know) but got my arse handed to me in a speed contest, for fun, at home, by a friend who was a secretary and did learn proper touch typing technique. She was like: "Oh you think you type fast uh?". So I simply asked her to teach me the proper technique and now, since decades already, I'm touch-typing the proper way. Having said that: you can be very fast using improper touch-typing technique.
