“Atomicity, something, something, Durability?”
My exact response after reading the first quote. It is indeed fundamental, and something I am mindful of with every database query I execute. But I haven’t thought about the exact definition and its mnemonic in over a decade.
- gameswithgo 5y agoIf I was hiring your response would be sufficient. Assuming you could expound a bit on the point of it and offer some example scenarios. So many interview objections are about extreme interpretations of these questions, which do happen but are not normal.
- mypastself 5y agoYeah, I assume the quoted interviewer attempted to further clarify the question and its intent. “Explain ACID” might be misheard or misunderstood by the subject. “Well, I don’t know, I guess I get reflux any time I’m doing an interview.“
- ivanhoe 5y agoI don't think anyone reasonable actually suggest that one has to memorize the exact book definitions, but simply to be demonstrate that they understand the important parts. Not being able to give any explanation or sign that you've at least heard of it is a completely different story from not being able to recall what the letter C stands for (consistency IIRC?). As the saying goes: If you think you understand something, and you can't explain it to someone else, that you probably don't really understand it.
