And it wasn’t possible to perform unattended installations, because they required to approve the license manually (“y” from keyboard input), so Oracle JDK was excluded from any Ansible/Puppet/Docker deployment or Linux distribution. Immediate roadblock.
- Spivak 5y agoYou can absolutely programmatically have apt make arbitrary selections like this with debconf. debconf-set-selections is your friend.
- lillecarl 5y agoyes | apt install whatever could work too.
- 3np 5y agoor just apt -y
- Zardoz84 5y agoIt just worked great with the apt packages to install Oracle Java 7 and 8 (when that packages worked...)
- capableweb 5y agoNot sure that would work in this case, `apt -y` would tell apt to skip confirmations, packages can still do their own confirmation. Also, NONINTERACTIVE=true (or what it is) I don't think would have worked either, as Oracle famously do their own thing.
- JazzXP 5y agoWow, what a moronic decision by Oracle. Automating installations is so important, if you're deploying 1000 servers, to not be able to automate (even just for the one character button) is stupid.
- ciupicri 5y agoI guess the license was so expensive that no one would have installed it on 1000 servers.
- tyingq 5y agoAssuming each server was 4 cores, that's 4000 processors. So you get their bargain $15/month/core pricing versus the base $25/month/core pricing. Your monthly bill would be $60k. Presumably you would negotiate some additional discount, but still...ouch. https://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/price-lists/java-se-subscription-pricelist-5028356.pdf https://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/price-lists/java...
- heelix 5y agoThe thing that killed most folks was the virtualized machines. They price on host, not guest OS. Got a 4 core virtual machine on a 128 core host... 128 cores need to be licensed. Those small web apps became crazy expensive where physical hardware is discouraged.

- raverbashing 5y agoWhen lawyers come before engineering, that's what you get.
- xwolfi 5y agoNot true - you can zip it and paste it anywhere. I don't think anyone would use their installer in automated deployment...
- krzyk 5y agoIt was easy to add it using cookies/or header - few Linux distributions did that this way.
