Sending data necessary to the functioning of the device(ex: knowing what programs to support compatibility with) is generally allowed through Art 6 https://gdpr-info.eu/art-6-gdpr/ https://gdpr-info.eu/art-6-gdpr/, I'm not your lawyer though.
