Fossil fuels doomed in New York as regulator blocks new gas power plants
- Bostonian 5y ago"The Department of Environmental Conservation denied permits for two proposed natural gas power plants, saying they were incompatible with the state’s climate law, which calls for an end to fossil fuel-generated electricity by 2040." What will New Yorkers say if they face spiraling power prices and blackouts?
- good8675309 5y agoUnfortunately we already know. They will just double down on their failed policies. Because the alternative would be to admit failure and they would rather people suffer than to ever do that.
- cronix 5y agoOregon's heading down the same path. > HB 2021 sets a timetable by which Oregon’s two major power companies, Portland General Electric and Pacific Power, must eliminate emissions associated with the electricity they provide. Five “electricity service suppliers” in the state also would face regulation, though their emissions are tiny compared to the big utilities. > While at least 17 other states have similar goals, Oregon’s timeline of getting power suppliers to zero emissions by 2040 is more ambitious than nearly all. In addition to that end date, regulated entities would be required to submit plans to reduce emissions by 80% from a baseline amount by 2030 and 90% by 2035. https://www.opb.org/article/2021/06/26/oregon-lawmakers-carbon-emissions-reduction-goals-state-energy-grid/ https://www.opb.org/article/2021/06/26/oregon-lawmakers-carb...
- splitstud 5y agoOh cmon there's literally billionaires they can take the money from
- bingohbangoh 5y agoThey won’t say anything. They’ll scratch their heads and then vote Democrat again. They’re not single issue voters but Trump hates immigrants. I’ll live by candle light if that’s what it takes!
- rsj_hn 5y agoThey wont face blackouts, they will import electricity from elsewhere. Still, it's a great opportunity for red states to build more reliable energy capacity and sell that to the blue states, which will need to import more power from them. If they don't do that, you will see rising prices everywhere, not just in New York, because there is a huge eastern grid, NY is not an isolated market that has to supply its own electricity.
- geoffmanning 5y agoSounds like good news to me. Adding more natural gas plants will just create more demand for fracking operations, which involves chemicals that bind to water at a molecular level.
- barbacoa 5y agoFracking will continue as they are mainly after the oil. The by product natural gas will simply be sent to burn off towers instead of being used to cheaply power people's homes.
- HNfriend234 5y agoarticles like this sound good until you realize that the grid often interconnects over multiple states. With pipeline infrastructure lacking. My guess is these gas plants are going to be built in states like Pennsylvania close to where gas is being produced. Easier to convert the shale gas into electricity closer to where it is produced.
