Maybe I read the article wrong, but it says that he makes a LOT more money now from individual subscribers than he did with Rolling Stones. That is not what people usually mean when they say 'follow the money', that implies that a person is taking money from someone to betray on his duties required by the profession.
What he is doing sounds like journalist optimization.
