I am ~850 ELO and I could tell that 5 minute blitz was no good for me, I had no time to think about anything. I would use up all my time just scanning for immediate threats. 10 minute works out well though, I can look for tactics. At some point you probably get faster as scanning for immediate threats and looking for tactics and 5 minute games start to make sense.
