What struck me when I read that comment is it sounds He is unwilling or unable to let the mechanisms of this type of business evolve.
In 2020 in 2021 companies who had an operating mode that could support remote work were less affected than those who physically could not support it as easily (food service for example). Some such as mine actually saw productivity gains and a cost savings (Office space expenses).
Everything has to adapt to a changing world, and business and finance is not excluded. I had a good fortune to change roles during the pandemic, the one that was not only fully remote but out of state. I interact more with people today than I did a year ago, and 90% of my team was hired after I was. If you hire people who can only learn physically shoulder to shoulder, you are making poor hiring or retention decisions.
> You cannot compare the buzz and energy of everyone being back in the office working together, in conference rooms and walking around hallways, to a hybrid or remote workforce,”
It’s likely I will forever interpret “buzz and energy“ as the desire to squeeze mythical levels of productivity out of every minute of every person’s day. It’s not about efficiency, it’s about squeezing people for everything You can get from them, even if it means burning them out.
Evolved or go extinct. The attitudes in that article sound like they were written by a dinosaur.
