While I agree it's a scummy landlord tactic, I don't buy that this affects anyone's ability to purchase a home in any way whatsoever. If you can't afford a one month overlap of rent then you cannot afford a home, period. Further, most people overlap anyway so they can make sure the new home is situated before filling it with stuff.
