Cheap money (low interest rates) will cause things like real estate to inflate. If you go back 30-40 years, you wouldn’t be able to get a loan with single digit interest rates (https://www.bankrate.com/mortgages/historical-mortgage-rates/ https://www.bankrate.com/mortgages/historical-mortgage-rates...). It was normal to have to pay 10-15% interest. Purchasing power has also improved over time (https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD?locations=US https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD?locat...). So you have more people, who are richer, and have better access to money, competing for homes. Additionally, those same people are able to afford much bigger and more expensive homes that have more features, more safety, more square footage, more everything. Isn’t it fully expected that house prices rise, particularly given the monetary policies that followed the subprime crisis?
But leaving all of that aside: if this is a debate about affordability, people can always choose to live in different places with different costs of living if they do not like their current location. That’s what is supposed to happen - a response to prices that then cools demand and causes prices to level off. No one is entitled to live in a high demand high cost of living desirable urban center at whatever price they want, doing whatever job they do. People have to either work harder or smarter to earn more and afford their dream house, or adjust to the realities of life as we all do.
